Mount Vernon's Emmanuel Episcopal Church has a new gallery space, and the artwork of Michael Sylvan Robinson is a distinctive choice for this venue. Descending/Rising is the name of the show, and it adequately describes his work, which is a combination of fiber art, mixed media and sculpture. He uses extensive hand sewing and beading to create imagery that ranges from heavenly to macabre, beautiful to bizarre.
Michael Sylvan Robinson is a Baltimore-based artist who began as a costume designer and performance artist in New York City. His work has been exhibited around the country, including the National Queer Arts Festival in San Francisco. Robinson is Director of Arts at Baltimore's Bryn Mawr School.
Seen (below) admiring one of the dazzling pieces from the show is Mount Vernon resident Krista Green, who happens to work for the Baltimore Office of Promotion and The Arts.
