BGE Landmark Implodes Into History

Photo from the BGE Collection at the BMI.
The huge 258-foot metal drum at Cold Spring Lane and the Jones Falls Expressway, a landmark since 1933, is now gone, imploded on the Sunday morning of March 24th after being out of service since 1997. Although some may think it was filled with vinegar, the often odorous vinegar facility is actually on the other side of Cold Spring Lane, while the "Melvale" gas holder held natural gas for Baltimore Gas & Electric (BGE) and was named after the long-forgotten mill community it dominated. The 26-acre site will be redeveloped, and the Jones Falls trail will soon extend here. The demolition contractors, along with many others, caught the implosion on video, and the boom could be heard for miles.
