African Renaissance

One of the most striking of the new murals to appear in the Station North Arts District's Open Walls 2 project this spring is this work by Italian artist Ozmo. Attempting to connect with the local community and the largely African-American neighborhood that lives in and around the district, Ozmo took the time to visit our Walters Art Museum, where he found an image of a Renaissance painting to reproduce. "Portrait of an African Man" by 16th century Flemish artist Jan Mostaert was one of 73 paintings, sculptures, prints, manuscripts and printed books brought together by the Walters for its 2012-2013 exhibition Revealing the African Presence in Renaissance Europe. (The exhibition later appeared at the Princeton University Art Museum). For the multi-story mural, Ozmo reproduced the African's handsome image against a new bullseye backdrop, targeting a positive role model from the past for anyone passing by its location on Greenmount Avenue near Lanvale Street.
