Historic African-American Church in Ruxton

Worth a visit if you’re near Ruxton, at the western edge of Towson in Baltimore County, St. John’s Church is an historic, Gothic-style, gable-roofed church built by African-Americans in 1886. The congregation that built the church dates back to the 1830s, and the property includes a stone house that predates the church building, as well as a cemetery. However, it is the church building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1982, that is noted for being “an exceptional example of an African-American church building in the late 19th century.” The church can be found at 7538 Bellona Ave.
