Sykesville’s Main Street & More

If you’re looking for a small-town Main Street, then Sykesville has one of the best. In fact, in 2020 Sykesville was named the “Best Main Street in America” by Independent We Stand, a national organization that promotes independently owned businesses. (Sykesville was also named the “Coolest Small Town in America” in 2016.) The shops and eateries along or near Main Street, along with its wine and beer festivals and a farmer’s market, make the town a destination. For history and architecture devotees, there are several sights to see… An 1884 train station converted into a restaurant is of note, and just a small drive from downtown Sykesville sits a former one-room schoolhouse, built for “colored” children and in use from 1904 to 1938. A restoration of the schoolhouse into a museum has begun, and when complete it will be the first museum in Carroll County devoted to African-American history.
